I’m officially a PB SOC volunteer!

September 20, 2012

Stephanie is one of many dogs available for adoption from the Sacramento County Animal Shelter

Over the past month I’ve been attending training on the weekends to become a volunteer with the Sacramento County Animal Shelter’s Pit Bull Socialization and Obedience Crew (PB SOC). This is a fairly new program whose mission is to provide for the health and welfare of shelter pit bull type dogs by focusing on basic obedience utilizing science based positive reinforcement, out of shelter life experiences, and social and confidence building skills to prepare dogs for successful adoptions. Sadly, the majority of shelter dogs these days seem to be chihuahuas and pit bull type dogs. What’s even more sad is that often these are overlooked by the majority of adopters. In many cases it’s due to the breed’s negative stereotypes, but also because these dog are so athletic by nature, they tend to go a little stir crazy sitting in a kennel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The goal of the PB SOC program is to give the dogs an outlet for their energy and teach them some basic skills that will allow their true personalities to shine when adopters walk through the shelter.

Today I volunteered on my own for the first time. I worked with two very sweet girls, Bonnie and Stephanie. Both are young dogs who are a little on the submissive side and need some confidence building. However both are very eager to please and LOVE belly rubs and scratches behind the ears. Bonnie is doing awesome with her “sit”, “down” and “watch me’s” and Stephanie is working on learning those behaviors. They are just a couple of the many wonderful dogs available for adoption in the shelter. If you are interested in adopting one of our PB SOC dogs or would like to learn more about the program, visit our Facebook page. You can also view a list of all adoptable shelter dogs on the Sacramento County Animal Control’s website. If you live in the Sacramento area and would like to learn more about volunteering at the shelter, there will be a general volunteer orientation this Saturday, September 22 from 10:30am-12:30pm. For more information, please contact Celeste Ingrid, Volunteer Coordinator at

  1. I was looking on this animal control’s website and realized YOU should be the one taking their pictures. The pictures on your blog of these animals really show the beauty and personality that is not coming through in the quick snapshots taken in the shelter. It’s amazing what a well-taken photo can do for these little lovers when it comes to finding a forever home.

    • The shelter has volunteers that come in to take pictures of the dogs, but in the meantime they have to rely on a quick “intake photo.” I do share my photos with the volunteer coordinator for the PB SOC program so hopefully they get passed on to the shelter.
