Another day at the shelter

September 21, 2012

Any time I start a new job or volunteer project, it’s not uncommon for me to feel a little like a duck out of water. I have to admit, that’s pretty much how I felt yesterday volunteering at the Sacramento County Animal Shelter. Working with the dogs was the easy part, but figuring out the logistics of where to go and how to get there had me feeling a little frustrated. So after getting some clarification last night from a couple of volunteer coordinators, I decided to go back today and give it another shot. I’m glad I did, instead of waiting until next week for my next shift. To say the least, I was having so much fun I didn’t want to leave.

I worked with four very wonderful dogs today and I’ll share a little about each of them in case you or someone you know might be looking for that perfect companion for your home 🙂

Lily is a sweet young female who loved running along the track, although she did tire easily. She would be a great jogging partner for someone, but will need to start out slowly to build her endurance.

Tinkerbell is an adorable 6 month old puppy who acts like she may have had some clicker training in her past life. Although she just joined the PB SOC program yesterday, today she was already offering sits and downs of her own free will in order to get the treat. She is extremely smart and loving.

Checkers just became available for adoption today. Although she seemed a little timid in her kennel, after a few minutes outside she relaxed enough to let her sparkling personality shine through. She is excellent on leash, and frequently looked up at me as we walked. She is an absolute sweetheart and loves to give kisses.

When I got Tarzan out of his kennel, I admit, I got a little choked up.  Tarzan is 8 years old, and it just doesn’t seem fair that at his age he should be living life in a shelter, and not in a home of his very own. I guess you could say I have a soft spot in my heart for older dogs, since all of my dogs are now seniors. However, don’t let Tarzan’s age fool you. This guy LOVES to run, and run fast! In fact, he gave me one heck of a workout today… no easy task considering how much running I do every day.

Hopefully all of these great dogs will find their forever home very soon! If you are interested in volunteering or adopting one of the many great dogs at the Sacramento County Animal Shelter, be sure to stop by at 3839 Bradshaw Road in Sacramento.

  1. Each of these animals is so beautiful and deserving of love. Thank you for what you do. It’s amazing how just one facebook post, one blog, or one “share” can make a difference, and perhaps even save a life.
